Fall Roof & Gutter Checklist for Northeast Georgia Homeowners

Leaves, pine needles, and winter storms are on the way. Here’s a simple checklist to get your roof and gutters ready, and what to leave to a pro.

Fall in Northeast Georgia is beautiful, until all those leaves and pine needles end up in your gutters. A little attention now can save you from overflowing gutters, leaks, and bigger problems once winter weather moves in.

Here’s a simple checklist you can work through in an afternoon, plus a few things that are better left to a pro.

Why Fall Is the Right Time

  • Leaves and pine needles pile up. Clogged gutters and valleys trap water right at the edge of your roof.
  • Winter is coming. Cold snaps, freezing rain, and in the higher elevations snow and ice are hard on a roof that already has weak spots.
  • Small problems are cheaper now. A loose flashing or a few missing shingles is a quick fix in October. After a winter of leaks, it can mean damaged decking and ceilings.

What You Can Check From the Ground

You don’t need to climb a ladder for most of this. Walk around your house on a clear day, and use binoculars if you have them. Look for:

  • Missing, lifted, or curling shingles, especially after windy weather
  • Dark streaks or moss, most common on shaded, north-facing slopes
  • Piles of leaves or needles in the valleys where two roof slopes meet
  • Loose or bent metal around the chimney, walls, and vents
  • A roofline that dips or sags anywhere along the ridge or edges
  • Shingle granules collecting at the bottom of your downspouts. It looks like coarse sand, and it’s a sign shingles are wearing out.

Take photos of anything that looks off. They’re helpful if you call a roofer or need to file an insurance claim.

Gutters & Downspouts

Your gutters do the most work in fall, so give them the most attention:

  1. Clean them after most of the leaves have dropped. If you have a lot of trees, a second cleaning later in the season may be worth it.
  2. Make sure downspouts are flowing. Run a hose into the gutter and watch the water come out the bottom.
  3. Point downspouts away from the house. Water should land several feet from your foundation, not right beside it.
  4. Look for sagging sections and leaking seams. Drips at the corners or gutters pulling away from the fascia need attention.
  5. Consider gutter guards if you’re cleaning out leaves and pine needles several times a year.

Trees & Branches

Trees are one of the biggest reasons roofs wear out early in Northeast Georgia.

  • Trim branches that hang over or touch the roof. They scrape shingles in the wind and drop debris right where you don’t want it.
  • Watch for dead or leaning trees near the house. A falling limb in a winter storm can do serious damage.
  • Hire a tree service for big jobs. Cutting limbs near a roof and power lines is dangerous work.

Take a Quick Look Inside the Attic

Some roof problems show up inside before they show up outside. On a sunny day, with a flashlight, check for:

  • Water stains or dark spots on the underside of the roof deck or rafters
  • Damp or matted insulation
  • Daylight coming through where it shouldn’t
  • A musty smell or heavy condensation, which can point to poor ventilation

Also look at the ceilings in your top floor, especially near exterior walls and around the chimney, for new stains.

When to Call a Pro

We don’t recommend walking on your roof. It’s easy to slip, and walking on shingles can damage them. Call a roofer if:

  • You spotted any of the warning signs above
  • You’ve had a leak, even a small one
  • A storm came through and you’re not sure if there’s damage. Storm damage help →
  • Your roof is 15 years old or older and hasn’t been looked at in a while

Our inspections are 100% free. We walk the roof, take photos, and give you a straight answer, even if the answer is that everything looks good. If a small repair is all you need, we’ll tell you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean my gutters?

At least once a year, and more often if you have trees near the house. Homes under heavy tree cover in Northeast Georgia often need cleaning in late fall after the leaves drop, and again in spring.

Should I get on my roof to inspect it?

We don’t recommend it. Roofs are slippery and steep, and walking on shingles can damage them. Check what you can from the ground or with binoculars, and leave the up-close look to a pro.

Do you offer gutter cleaning?

Yes. We clean gutters, check that downspouts are flowing, and can install gutter guards to cut down on future clogs.
